Richard Branson paints Amsterdam green

Forget painting the town red, today Richard Branson is painting Amsterdam green to open the Postcode Lottery Green Challenge final.

The Virgin Founder gave the city’s logo a makeover this morning at the Westergasfabriek cultural complex. He kicked off the international Postcode Lottery Green Challenge competition for sustainable startups, as chair of this year’s jury.

Armed with a paint sprayer and brushes, Branson and the five Postcode Lottery Green Challenge finalists painted the logo’s red letters ‘Iam’ green with sustainable paint.

This afternoon, the contenders vied for €500,000 to realise their carbon-reducing business plans. The finalists were chosen from 311 submissions to help green entrepreneurs bring innovative, sustainable products and services to market.

Two Dutchmen, Wolbert Allaart of the Hague and Patrick Heuts of Oosterbeek were competing against three American women: Ginger Dosier, Alison Greenlee and Kavita Shukla.
