One of the annual highlights of the Grachtenfestival (Canal Festival) is the Prinsengracht Concert, a spectacular classical extravaganza on the canal.
The 32nd edition of the Prinsengracht on 24 August is dedicated to the 400th anniversary of the Amsterdam canals and the 125th anniversary of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra.
This open air classical music concert used to be called The Pulitzer Concert, because it is staged on pontoons floating on water just in front of the Pulitzer Hotel. This year’s event is on 24 August 2013 and is headlined by the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, who are midway through their 125th jubilee celebrations.
Teaming up with the orchestra is the Maltese tenor Joseph Calleja, who is sure to enrapture audiences with a number of well-loved arias, including the celebrated ‘Nessun Dorma’ from Puccini’s Turandot. The orchestra will also be performing Tchaikovsky’s always-spectacular 1812 Overture. The concert will be conducted by Antonio Pappano.
