Britsoc: The British Society of Amsterdam and the Netherlands. Serving the British Expat community since 1920.

The British Society of Amsterdam

The British Society of Amsterdam…

extends a very warm British welcome to all our members, newcomers, regulars, families, singles, couples, non-membersand friends from around the world.

The British Society is open to people of every nationality looking to meet new friends and socialise. With such a variety of people from diverse backgrounds, it’s difficult not to find people who you can connect with. I have enjoyed being taken under the wing of a rather sociable young Scottish lady, and look forward to our regular meetings for that all important glass (or ten) of vino and gossip.

We all like a bit of fun, and there is no shortage of fun with the British Society. Fun is the common thread that runs through all the sporting and social activities throughout the year. Nothing taken too seriously, although the regular squash club players might disagree! A good laugh whatever you decide to get involved with – Guaranteed!

As Expats, we all go through various stages of feeling home sick, or just feeling detached from our families and friends at home. As human beings it is important to have a strong sense of community, a feeling of belonging, a simple ‘Hi’ from someone you know when you are out and about. It makes me feel very at home when this happens, and it helps me realize that through getting involved with the British Society I have become part of a new community, helping me adjust to my new life in the Netherlands. Volunteering on the marketing sub committee has also allowed me to use my professional skills and give something back.

You can buy all the guide books you like, but there is still nothing better than getting local information from the people who know. It’s nice to get under the skin of the city quickly and appreciate the many different things to do that the guide books forget to tell you. I have enjoyed the articles in the monthly bulletin that our members take the time to write and they have helped fill many a weekend when we have visitors over. Did you know you can go naked swimming on a Tuesday night?! I will leave that up to you to find out where!!!

It’s always good to try something new or different. From soft tennis to corporate yoga, golf and girl talk, there are a huge range of sporting and social activities on a weekly and monthly bases for all to enjoy. Nothing ventured nothing gained is my motto so last month I went sailing for the first time ever. Despite the lack of wind and a few bruises here and there, (I forgive you Arie!) I had a ball and can’t wait to sign up again.

While you don’t have to be a member to enjoy BritSoc, there are some attractive discounts on offer. Membership is just €30 a year or €55 for a family! Payments made in a particular quarter will be valid until the end of the month of that quarter in the following year.

Members also receive the free monthly ZINE magazine, packed with information about what’s coming up and a full range of discounts to many of our events.

So there you have it, lots of great reasons to join the British Society or renew your membership.  To renew or join, send an email to Gillian Brooks, our membership secretary, through our Contact page.  There in the drop-down Office list, you can select her name and compose your correspondence.
