Britsoc Photo Lesson #16 – Engagement shoots can be fun!

BritPhotShot of the Month

Amsterdam is infinitely photogenic. That’s why it makes the perfect backdrop for an engagement shoot! Just this past summer I was lucky enough to be asked to cover the surprise proposal by Jeremy of his high school sweetheart Rebecca. That happened at a place we picked out; the corner of Reguliersgracht and Prinsengracht.

britphotshot-photo-spetember-20161Once the proposal had been safely navigated, ring on the finger of the blushing bride-to-be, we then set off on a walkabout of some of the city’s finest sights. Leidsegracht is always a great canal to pick because it has this wonderful bridge and a lot of photogenic boats passing underneath. The result on this blessed July Sunday – one of the few genuinely nice days this summer – was this incredibly striking image.

It just goes to show that engagement shoots don’t have to be stuffy and studio bound. They can be fun and full of all the joy that the couple anticipate experiencing on their wedding day.

Britsoc Photo Lesson #15 – People are great!

I make a living from photographing people. Children, business folk, CEOs, families

even royalty … each year they tend to come in sight of one of my lenses. When I

review the year I look back on all the amazing things it’s been a privilege to witness

and the one conclusion I can draw is this; people are GREAT!

That is never more apparent than during the festivities over Pride Weekend; this year

from August 5-7. There’s no doubt its the best pride in the world by far. The reasons

are simple; first, Amsterdam has a long, rich history of welcoming LGBT people.

Second, the normal LGBT scene here in the city is thriving and there’s no doubt that

this is one of Europe’s great centres for living an out and proud life as a member of

the LGBT community. Third, the weekend shows all that in glorious technicolour! I

was lucky enough to witness that from a great perch on a boat during last year’s

canal parade.

This is one of my favourite shots from that day. It tells me simply this;

no matter who the person or people are in front of your camera… come at them

with the attitude of “you are beautiful and I want to capture your energy and your

beauty” and you won’t go far wrong.

Long exposures create wonderful effects

Benji

By Benjamin Authur, Photographer

BritPhotShot of the Month

This classic view of the corner of Brouwergracht & Prinsengracht was taken on the morning the clocks changed. So I had an extra hour of daylight without people around and, bonus of bonuses, it was a stunning morning.

This photo was shot using two graduated filters and with a 30 second exposure. The longer exposure really helps add dynamic movement to the scene from both the clouds and the canal. Learning how to do this is one of the greatest joys one can have as a photographer. Tis not complicated but it does take practice. If you are interested in coming out with me for a lesson on how to do this I’d be delighted to show you how its done.

About Benjamin Arthur
I’m a leading independent freelance photographer, working with corporate & individual clients in the Netherlands, Czech Republic, UK and elsewhere. Capturing the spirit of you or your event is my first priority.

Passion, creativity and professionalism
The areas I focus on can be seen in my galleries and I love each individual commission with the challenges they bring and the fun we have together. Passion, creativity and professionalism are the three things above all that I bring to my work. I love it all … from the dreaming and planning through to the execution & delivery. My approach throughout is 1000% focused on you – placing you and your needs at the centre of everything.

Reportage photographer
Successful outcomes are the result of strong relationships. In terms of style, I describe myself as a reportage photographer. I like to work as far as possible with natural light and that applies as much to my portraiture work as it does weddings, events and parties.

I try to blend in rather than stand out
I quietly observe what’s going on around me. Then, when I need to step up for a large group photo, I’m lucky to have a strong voice that can marshal everyone into shot.

Well travelled
Based in the stunning city of Amsterdam, I also regularly work in Prague and will happily travel across continental Europe and the world on assignment. I’m blessed to be married to Leigh Ann who helps me in a thousand ways and is a true partner. When not behind my lens, you’ll find my nose in a book or a saucepan or, too rarely, tramping around England’s stunning landscapes.

I look forward to working with you

‘Fish n Chips for the Soul’ magazine wanted an inside look at what really goes on during Amsterdam’s Legendary Gay Pride Boat Parade. That’s why we sent our intrepid photographer, Benjamin Arthur, onto one of the boats to find out.

I have to admit to feeling a bit nervous about joining one of the Pride boats for this year’s Boat Parade. Firstly, I’m not gay though have many gay friends. Secondly, I didn’t know what to wear. A worry that is in itself quite gay I suppose!

Our boat is packed full of plastic fantastic pink people

Thirdly, hi-spec cameras and boats don’t normally mix well – especially when you throw in the inevitable alcohol that accompanies any big Amsterdam party.

In the end, I needn’t have worried about a thing. My friends – old & new – were incredibly welcoming and delighted to have some proper photos of their big day out. They dressed me up all in pink! And, in spite of the flowing booze and the hot day, everything went off perfectly and nothing got lost in any of the canals. It was an extraordinary day.

All those hours in the gym have to be good for something right guys?!

Riding ON the boat gives one a completely different perspective both on the actual parade itself but also just on how much this day means for Amsterdam’s large and growing LGBT community. When one is on the canals looking onto the parade there’s a lot of people and it just feels great to be in among such a festive atmosphere. On the actual boat one passes through all those people quite serenely and its pretty overwhelming how packed is the Prinsengracht and the Amstel. I hope the photos capture that.

It just goes to show what a spectacle this is and how Amsterdammers have taken the LGBT community into their hearts. All in all huge props to all concerned and thanks for putting up with the straight guy for one day boys!

Passing through the canals one is overwhelmed by all the people everywhere.

Work with diagonals to create striking pictures

Benji

By Benjamin Authur, Photographer

BritPhotShot of the Month

There is an abundance of beauty in Amsterdam, but using it as a photographer to create striking images with people can be a challenge. Couple of tips here from this recent walkabout I did in town.

As we were walking around, I noticed this line of olde worlde shop signs and thought they looked nice. So work with what’s in front of you to bring out the beauty.
Then I placed my client in the middle of the row.
And, lo and behold, the diagonal comes to the fore.
The reason this shot works aesthetically is precisely because of that diagonal, which creates the pleasing line from bottom left to middle of the lower right-hand third.

If you are interested in having you, your family or a friend photographed in Amsterdam why not give me a call?

Get the pose and the setting right and the rest will follow

Benji

By Benjamin Authur, Photographer

BritPhotShot of the Month

Last month we talked about how important it is to let children just be themselves. The same applies to babies of course but then again in the context of a big Christening day – when Mum & Dad are really in charge – there’s not much latitude to express yourself!

Getting nice pictures is where a professional photographer can really then make the difference. You may think your iPhone will do. It won’t.

In the case of this recent Christening I photographed, it was all about the pose and the setting. A beautiful dress. A baby still unable to walk. Spread out the dress and sit it on the grass.

It was a broiling hot day and so the last thing I wanted was heavily contrasted sunshine all over this babe – which is where she had first been placed.

Many people mistakenly still think that sunny days are great for photos. They are not.

So I moved this beautiful babe into the shade, spread out her dress and let the magic happen.

I chose a shallow depth of field to really make her “pop” out of her setting.

Let children, above all, be themselves

Benji

By Benjamin Authur, Photographer

BritPhotShot of the Month

I was lucky enough to shoot a client event in Los Angeles last month. After two days stuck in a hotel conference room, I was glad to land in sunny, windswept Malibu where I caught up with an old school friend who is busily making his fortune in LA.

He has a wonderful 7-year-old daughter and she’s is a real natural in front of the camera. The trick in this case was just to let her do her thing and simply be there to capture it. So the lesson today is simply this; when shooting children let them be themselves. Don’t try to control them. Don’t try to pose them too much. Just let them do their thing and let the magic happen.

Clearly you also have to know the right settings, which, in this case, were all about shutter speed; keep that high, the ISO low and work the aperture setting accordingly. With this relatively new 50mm 1.4 lens from Nikon I’m finding I can be ready for almost anything!
